Gordon Reef, minimum requirement level: Beginner 10 – 15m / Advanced 20 – 30m
The most southerly of the four reefs in Tiran; landmarked in the north by the wreck of the “Loullia” and to the south by the shallow plateau which is protected from waves. A good location for new divers experiencing their first drift dives. The whole reef is abundant in small and large fish life – turtles, giant moray, eagle rays and mantas in the spring.
Jackson Reef, minimum requirement level: Beginner min. 20 dives / Advanced
The most northerly of the Tiran reefs and one of the most beautiful dive sites in the area, with heavily populated coral plateaus that combine with dramatic walls. Famous for schooling hammerheads that can be found on the north side of the reef early in the summer. Keep your eye in the blue in the summer – pelagics can be seen.
South Laguna, minimum requirement level: Beginner
Almost famous for the boat, De Lara, that can often be found moored here (the boat of our “big boss” Umbarak!!). On a serious note; the site is located to the east of Tiran and borders Tiran Island creating the north and south lagoon. These reefs are made up of hard coral plateaus and situated to the north can be found the wreck of the Kormoran – a nice shallow wreck for beginners.
Thomas Reef, minimum requirement level: Beginners 20 dives / Advanced
Situated between Gordon and Woodhouse; it is the smallest of the reefs with deep plunging walls covered with soft coral, and an amazing gorgonia forest at 25. It is almost possible to circumnavigate this reef in one dive current permitting; keep your eye in the blue during the summer months for passing pelagic but don’t forget to look at the reef sometimes!
Woodhouse Reef, minimum requirement level: Beginners 10 – 15m / Advanced 20 – 30m
Between Jackson and Thomas lies a long, slender reef – Woodhouse. It provides a combination of coral plateaus and walls and is the easiest site for one way drift diving as there are no complicated corners (which create back currents) to deal with. An ideal site for beginners to experience their first drift dive.
